At just 45mins from town (depending on the road conditions), the lake and surroundings trails get very crowded in the summer months. This painting was inspired by a midweek trip in early summer when the area was quite and calm.

This was one of the few times I took the time to draw while hiking

at the height of a beautiful sunset

the Smith flows through some truly spectacular scenery with deep pine forests and towering limestone cliffs rising around every bend

most notably the thimbleberry and rocky mountain maple

This work evolved into an idea that the landscape around me had three stories to tell: a geological story
