The Virgin Mary and Mary Magdalene c.1750A pair of early and naively carved figures depicting The Virgin Mary and Mary Magdalene. c. 1750 and possibly part of a larger frieze out of a chapel or church. With much of their original polychrome remaining, including their blue cloaks and red dresses. These larger than average figures make wonderful stand alone decorative pieces or would fit into a larger religious collection. Size per figure maximum.

now foxed with centuries of age

The cross would have originated from a Church in the Newark/ Nottingham area

decorated in strong cobalt blue with a floral cartouche framing the inscription TABAC HOLLANDE

A gilt-wood bound

stayed with Sir Antony in 1560 when her husband Dudley was away at Court

Sabatino de Angelis & Fils were renowned for their cast bronzes using the lost wax process (exactly as the original Roman statues would have been) and were given exclusivity to cast direct from sculptures in the National Archeological Museum of Naples

Worth noting on the top shelf the original brackets and fixings are still in place

The canted corners are enhanced with carved ebonised pilasters of life-like male heads - perhaps portraits of the aristocratic who commissioned it - and acanthus leaf scrolled capitals above turned feet
