When the engines combustion temperature rises above approximately 2,500 degrees, the EGR valve opens and allows exhaust gases to be drawn back through the intake system. A controlled amount of exhaust gas is recirculated and mixed with the incoming air and fuel in the cylinders, helping to regulate combustion temperatures during normal driving conditions.
